green eyes

First off, I admit...I erased my acne. Sue me. 365 doesn't have to be 100% honest, does it?

But in the spirit of revealing something about myself...I admit that I've never used liquid eyeliner before. Yeah, not a big deal, but today I bought some "make your green eyes pop" liquid eyeliner.

So, nothing amazing and facinating from me today....but I challenge you to go out and try something (small) that you have never done/used/tried before!

365-Confessions

Actually, this was more to show a secret habit...I love to read kids books. Yup, that's right. If I have a choice between an "adult" novel and a "kid" or "teen" novel....I'll pick the teen. I heard that the Septimus Heap books were good (thanks Tresa!). I raced through them and found them to be a lot of fun. I wonder if they will be a movie one day? (Just like HP)

Mostly it's cause I read to relax. Reading about adult stresses, complicated relationships and issues just not relaxing!

Plus, I can guarantee that a teen book isn't as likely as an "adult" book to be full of gratuitous sex and smut.
I know, I said it's like it's a bad thing and some of you may disagree, but let's face it. If my husband is here, I'm very happy with him, thank you. very much. And if he is deployed....I don't want some fictional character rubbing it in my face that I'm not getting lucky!

365 again.

EDIT**365 DELETED...I HATED IT.

So I'm going to attempt a 365 again. Last time I bombed and didn't even make it a month, but on my first goround, I was near the 200 day mark.

I decided to start doing a 365 to motivate me to blog more. I love my family and there are so many wonderful things in my life that I just feel the urge to be creative and joyful and well....express myself.

So this is my way of accepting my flaws, you will see bad pics and poorly taken shots...but at least i'm doing it!

Who wants to join me?

Swimming With Superheros

Yesterday while the kids napped, I was exhausted and wanted to relax. (but napping was out of the questions) I wanted to be cool and read a book and I was tired of being trapped in the house.

So, of course I grabbed a book and lounged in the kids blow up pool in the backyard. I stuck a lounge chair in the pool so I could soak my feet without getting my book wet. Ahhh.

But Connor came out and wanted to get in. That was fine...until he said, "Mom, why do you have to read all the time? You are kind of boring."

Eeeek! So of course, I had to put the book away and play with my boy. We wrestled and splashed and had a squirt gun fight. We practiced floating and holding our breath underwater. He is working on not holding his nose and opening his eyes!

I got this shot of Connor swimming underwater...afterwards I noticed Dash floating his way into the shot. I love it. My superhero boy with his superhero toy.

Woo Hoo. My green peppers are doing great. I love to go out in the early morning when it's still cool and see how my happy plants are doing. I even enjoy weeding....go figure! It's nice to see progress and healthy plants growing. I can't wait to get some yummy food too!

The peppers are the only plant that is producing. My tomatoes are just starting to flower and the squash has revived but isn't showing signs of any pending veggies. The broccoli are strong and healthy, but are just stalks. After one tiny head, no progress has been made. My red peppers are just small and barely growing at all. Sigh.

If I'm completely honest.....I think that this is NOT a money saving venture. The cost of water is probably more than a few peppers would cost at the store! But I'll stick with it. I'm hoping I'll see more progress soon.

Musicals vrs. The Opera

On our way home from the VLA performance of Suessical the Musical, Matt commented that this children's production was way (way WAY) better than The Bat (the opera we went to in Austin) and it was a heck of a lot cheaper!

I have to admit that he is 100% right. It was fun to dress up and be "grown ups" and do something together, but the Opera itself left a lot to be desired. Enough about that however, I'm happy and want to brag on these kids.

The Cast was GREAT! I was so impressed with the singing abilities and the pure talent of these kids. Special kudos to Sydni Bringhurst for a great job falling down! The Grinch, Horton, Maisy (the flashy bird with a great voice and attitude) and Gertrude (a plain, yet kooky and adorable bird) were fantastic. Connor and Maddy were enthralled by the sets and special effects (yup, black lights and smoke!) and really enjoyed the dancing and singing too.

So I'm tired and going to bed, but if you have the chance to catch Suessical before the run is done, I highly recommend that you do it!

Maddy Loo Whoo

I love this fabric. It was so bright and cheerful that I just had to buy it. It sat around for months until I spotted this pattern in Mom's fabric store, ahem, I mean, basement. Never mind, after a quick search I couldn't find an image online and if I wait to scan it.....well, I'd like to post it sooner rather than later.

So anyway, I found a pattern from 1978, coincidentally, the year I was born...so I felt obliged to make it. It's got a unique neckline with elastic on the sleeves and no clasps, snaps or zippers. So quick and easy, right? Not exactly. Figuring out the wierdness of the collar took time and then I started helping Juliet learn to sew, so I didn't get much done. Then Juliet moved and it became a permanant fixture on my craft table.

I saw the coolest blog about OPAM. One Project A Month. The idea being that a super motivated person can do a lot in one month...but normal people with lives tend to get sidetracked and have a ton of unfinished projects and fewer finished ones! My one project this month was to get that darn dress finished.

As usual, it was not nearly as hard once I actually got started. Go figure. And as usual, it turned out way to big for Maddy. She is 26.4 lbs now and much smaller than patterns would lead you to believe. But it's done. Before the end of the month, no less. And with MATCHING HAIR BOWS. It's bright and flashy and fun and perfect to wear when we go see Suessical the Musical tomorrow!

And since I finished my OPAM, I thought, I bet I could make a matching dress for her doll....I'll let you know how long it takes to finish that one!

Maddy also decided that a dress is never done unless it has a great big pink bow....We finally wrapped it around her 4 times so she would quit tripping on it!

And as I'm writting this, Maddy just walked up and asked for a "Dr Point-mint" because she has "coughage" and needs a sticker. I love my little girl.

Tiny Tiny Pieces of Boy

So I looked outside this morning and I saw Connor's little Buzz "Like-Year" standing guard over the pool. I had to smile as I remembered how he insisted that it was LIKE year, not Lightyear for almost a year.

Our family has a bunch of inside jokes, phrases and words that we refer to because the kids had trouble saying the real words.

We shop at ALL mart, not Walmart becuase "Mom, they have everything there so that's why they are All mart!"

Of course, short term memory girl is suddenly struck by a complete lack of examples.....so here's another pic.

So much for blogging.

Think back

I was ten. I lived in Michigan at KI Sawyer AFB (now defunct) and I hadn't really figured out just how complicated life could be. Boy, was I in for a shock! I still dreamed of having a family of 6 children (yeah, THAT's not happening any time soon!) Matt was 18! When I asked him, he said he was probably working at Burger King and doing lots of Martial Arts. He hadn't left on a mission yet and was just figuring out what to do with his life.

I was 20. I had joined the Military and was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey at the Defense Language Institute learning Korean. I wasn't very good at it however. I had rocked out of the course and was running the Training Room. Matt and I had been married just over a year and we were preparing to move to Texas...me to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and Matt was headed to Goodfellow AFB. The first of many separations....

We were here in Texas, this house. Connor was one year old. Matt was in Korea and we were just getting along day by day. I was in the Primary with Ginger and Debbie...some of the best memories I have from then. I spent my time teaching between 8-12 yoga classes a week and scrapbooking. Connor still thought that Daddy was the computer. In fact, when Matt returned, he called him "mom"! He didn't know anyone with a Dad so he assumed all parents were Mom or Mommy!

Maddy was just a tiny thing...still is. Matt had recently returned from Iraq and we were adjusting to being a family of 4. I was teaching yoga and pilates at Gym X, dancing Can can and Matt was a platoon SGT. Connor was going to preschool with Debbie Sessions and loved to play with Dakota all day...every day.
Matt was in Iraq again and we were doing everything we could to stay busy. I had finished building the extension on the house and taken my first few trapeze lessons. The kids had just started Gymnastics and Dance. I was going to College online. We had just found out that Matt was not coming home for R&R as hoped. It had been 8 months already and they were extended to 15 months. I was just exhausted and missed him terribly. He finally made it home at the 11 month mark

So far this year
The biggest event was welcoming Matt home. Connor's done so well in school, Maddy is learning and growing....only 2 more years till she can go to school! We are just going with the flow, enjoying time off for the summer. I'm building my photography business and looking at more school for me. Matt is the 1SG for his unit, working long hours but doing a wonderful job getting his soldiers ready to deploy.

Yesterday
Hmm..
. Yesterday was a typical Saturday. Crazy and lazy! We started out with a trip to VLA for the Breakfast with the Cat in the Hat. I did the promo pictures and the kids checked out a car show with Matt. After that we had a family outing to Mc D's
for junk food lunch. Matt and I read while the kids exhausted themselves on the play equipment. Then it was off to home for a long nap, processing all the pictures and lazing about!

Today
We rolled out the door for Church and the kids are down for an after-church nap while Matt does a quick barracks check....then lazing about for the afternoon with lots of cuddles and maybe a fun movie..

Tomorrow
Gee, I'd have to check my calendar. I have to worry about today before tomorrow takes over. I do know that I'll be a mom and clean the house and do some other stuff too. Just life I guess.

In the next year
My baby sister is getting married this summer, so it's road trip time! I haven't been back to Michigan in years, but it's wonderful in the summer, so it will be fun. I do know I'd love to go on a big vacation (Disney!), visit friends and family in Colorado and actually lose 20lbs (but probably not). Connor will start 1st Grade and Maddy will *hopefully* start a playgroup or something fun. We'll keep up gymnastics and Dance and church and the daily stuff. I'd like to take some more photography classes too. Matt leaves for Iraq again, so we will cram as much of the fun stuff in before he takes off again. Maybe I'll do another crazy project when he leaves and remodel the kitchen or something!

SIGH.....Again.

So I'm on crutches AGAIN. I want to scream. I hate being trapped by the darn things. My foot started to hurt last week in the same place that it hurt last fall when I had a stress fracture...so I'm on crutches till the 30th at least. AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

My little Ballerina

dancing girl, originally uploaded by Life Happens.

Maddy had her recital (but I've procrastinated blogging about it) on the last weekend in May. She was so incredibly tiny! Check out the pics of everyone lined up at the end....she is a full head shorter than the next girl in her class.

We didn't have horrible seats, but wow, some of the parents must have been waiting for over an hour. It was packed. Fortuanatly, I had my huge zoom lens...unfortunately I wasn't prepared to shoot from across an darkened auditorium at a awkwardly lit stage.

At least Maddy was adorable. The bow was bigger than her head! We had to alter it to make it small enough to fit. She was thrilled to dance on a big stage in her "ballerina dress".
DSC_4895
She took very careful, ballerina steps with her hands held just as she was told....but her tiny legs took a LONG time to get to the other end of the stage....the next group was set up and waiting for her to get off the stage so they could start...but she wouldn't run!

It was funny to see her afterwards though. She was so tired that even when Connor gave her a bouquet of flowers she smiled but she was obviously too exhausted to get excited. She crashed, hugging her flowers, before we made it home.

OPAM-What a great idea!

One blog that caught my eye was a comment about OPAM. ONE PROJECT A MONTH.

What a concept. What an idea. Just think. Instead of the huge list of things I want to get done, I pick one. Instead of having a dozen half finished projects at the end of the month....I have a finished one!

I love it.

So I checked out a few OPAMs for inspiration. I LOVED this idea and I swear I'm going to steal it. I love the TTL effect and the minimal frames. (glass only). I even showed Matt and HE liked it.

But I don't think this is a good OPAM to start on. I'm already feeling overwhelmed and panicky. Maybe something else. I could finish the garden. Sigh. I SHOULD finish the garden.
I should finish the vintage style yellow print dress I started for Maddy too. Oh, and clean her closet out. Speaking of closets....Connor's needs some work. And the garage....yikes.

Wait wait. ONE project. JUST one. Okay...um. The garden is a "work in progress" so I'll let that be for now. I'll finish the dress so I can put my sewing machine away.

But the other things on my list are still there...just not this month.

What's on your list? Do you have an OPAM that you want to do for June?

How cool is that?

Matt called me the other night from climbing at Boulders. I could barely understand him but he was trying to tell me that he wanted to take me to see something in Austin. Something about flounder, mice and Bats.

Fortunately, the connection got a (tiny bit) better and he explained that he wanted to take me to Austin to see a performance of "The Bats".

Now I should explain that Austin is famous for the bats that live under the Congress Street Bridge and people flock to the river to see them take to the sky at dusk. They love the bats so much that they named the Hockey team the "Ice Bats". They are also known as the "Live music Capitol of the World" so a performance titled "the Bats" isn't such a strange though.

So I googled it and it turns out that Matt was inviting me to go to the Opera. "Die Fledermause
" by Johann Strauss...updated Austin style. Go figure. This is the guy who loves car shows. Ohhh, I am thrilled. How fun!

But I have to admit, while inviting me to the opera stands out as a cool event, I shouldn't be surprised
that he knows the plot/background. This guy reads. He has a wealth of information tucked away into his brain and he will occasionally spout random bits of incredible knowledge. In fact, when we were about to be married, I met his family. His brothers were a grease-covered, scary, long-haired, evil looking bunch that I would not want to meet in a dark alley. (They are much nicer than they appear!) So we are sitting around and Matt's brother, Mike cracks a joke....some oblique reference to a Shakespearean play. (They are also smarter than they looked!) So really....the opera should not be a surprise...especially since the original is in German. Yeah, Matt speaks German in addition to Korean, Spanish and probably Arabic (by now.)

so I'm off to the Opera. My only question.....should I dress for "THE OPERA" or should I dress for Opera...Austin style?

Bragging again.

Maddy is just so cute. I ran across this picture this afternoon and I had to share.....she's just so cute!

Good Luck My Friend!

I was lucky enough to have Juliet as my friend this last year. We bonded over our husbands' deployments, our kids and our love of yoga. It developed into so much more than that.

Juliet is one of the few people that I can talk to about anything. I mean that. I don't have to hold back my opinion or thoughts; she is willing to accept that we may not agree and still wants to be my bud. We can talk about religion, politics, Walmart, school, life, you name it and even if we didn't agree...we could see each other's ideas and learn from them.

She is my granola friend that encouraged me to be more laid back and less critical of myself. We worked out together and stressed about our kids and husbands together...She ignored my critical view of the Army/world and still gave of herself cheerfully, running the FRG and supporting pretty much anyone who needed it.

I'll miss her in Arizona. But if any of you happen to see this red-head wandering around Ft H., say hi. You will probably love her just as much as me.

The end of an era

I have been so busy that blogging has taken a back seat to the rest of my life, but I'm making it a goal to get a few updates posted.
Last flight
Trapeze is over for the season. It's been a lot of fun and a growing experience for me. I am a very outgoing person, but I tend to hold back if I'm the tinesy-est bit unsure. It's really noticable in my flying. When I overthink what I need to do, or worry about my grip or anything else....I go through the motions and don't fully give it my all.
So this summer, I'm going to work on getting past that. Having faith that even if I can't be perfect, I can still throw myself into whatever I am doing unconditionally.

Trapeze was also a great time for Juliet and I to bond. She started out scared of heights and it only took 3 classes (yeah, I kept dragging her back) for her to feel the addiciton. This last class was a amazing...she was doing things that she never knew she could. I will miss my bud. She is headed off to Arizona for a new life out there....good think they have a trapeze school in Phoenix!

We planned to catch a class (pun intended) on Tuesday, but luck was not with us. We only made it a few minutes out of town when we got a flat tire. Thankfully, being the resourseful, independent women we are, we managed to change the tire. Good thing we are so cool becuase NOBODY stopped.
Unfortunately, the spare was flat too! We called Matt to save us and did what every woman should do when stranded on the side of the highway....we turned up the radio and danced to 80s music!

Here are Juliet and Catie showing
off some extra cool moves.

The obligatory handstand next to the flat spare tire.

Wouldn't you know it? 5 minutes before Matt made it out to us....a woman stopped and she had an air pump in her truck...Fantastic! What a great woman.

We didn't make it to class that night, but we did catch the very last class of the season.
Me modeling the Bucket o'caffeine that 7-11 offers. It's BIGGER THAN MY HEAD. Yikes. In our defense, we were really tired and needed to wake up, we shared it, and we didn't even come close to finishing it.
But we had to get it....How could you not want a bucket of Dr. Pepper?
