Matt called me the other night from climbing at Boulders. I could barely understand him but he was trying to tell me that he wanted to take me to see something in Austin. Something about flounder, mice and Bats.
Fortunately, the connection got a (tiny bit) better and he explained that he wanted to take me to Austin to see a performance of "The Bats".
Now I should explain that Austin is famous for the bats that live under the Congress Street Bridge and people flock to the river to see them take to the sky at dusk. They love the bats so much that they named the Hockey team the "Ice Bats". They are also known as the "Live music Capitol of the World" so a performance titled "the Bats" isn't such a strange though.
So I googled it and it turns out that Matt was inviting me to go to the Opera. "Die Fledermause" by Johann Strauss...updated Austin style. Go figure. This is the guy who loves car shows. Ohhh, I am thrilled. How fun!
But I have to admit, while inviting me to the opera stands out as a cool event, I shouldn't be surprised that he knows the plot/background. This guy reads. He has a wealth of information tucked away into his brain and he will occasionally spout random bits of incredible knowledge. In fact, when we were about to be married, I met his family. His brothers were a grease-covered, scary, long-haired, evil looking bunch that I would not want to meet in a dark alley. (They are much nicer than they appear!) So we are sitting around and Matt's brother, Mike cracks a joke....some oblique reference to a Shakespearean play. (They are also smarter than they looked!) So really....the opera should not be a surprise...especially since the original is in German. Yeah, Matt speaks German in addition to Korean, Spanish and probably Arabic (by now.)
so I'm off to the Opera. My only question.....should I dress for "THE OPERA" or should I dress for Opera...Austin style?
