Connor keeps telling me how he isn't excited or nervous about school; "It just is what it is."
He made it all summer without serious injury and the weekend before school started, decided to get attacked by ninjas. We are calling it "attacked by ninjas" but in reality, he propped a ricketty old stepladder on top of a rusty old trash can and leapt from his perch at the top to grab a branch.
The branch was about an inch thick and completely dead. Needless to say, the weight of a flying 10 year old boy was more than enough to tear it loose. I heard the screams and was out the door before the other kids made it in the house. I know the difference between playing and real injury screams. I'm running up and freaking out because he is curled up holding his arm, crying and not moving….with his leg bent very scarily underneath him. I just kept telling him "get up, come here" because I needed to see him move so I knew nothing was too badly damaged.
He was a trooper though. Scraped arm, gash on eyebrow, shallow puncture in ribs and a wounded ego….but he didn't pass out. He sat with ice on his face and arm and then quietly asked if he could come cuddle me. We sat snuggled on the couch and he whispered, "Could I call Dad on the phone?"
Poor Dad was taking advantage of some alone time while the kids and I were in Mesa….and we managed to call in the middle of a movie! But he went out into the hall and called Connor back and spent a few minutes letting Connor have Dad time.
So I can't tell anyone at the school that he is a tree climbing dork, but I can tell them that he saved me from a ninja attack…..while in a tree.
